Apple's iPhone and iPad run undisclosed services that allow security features to be bypassed, according to a prominent computer security researcher.

In a presentation at the HOPE/X hacking conference in New York on Friday, forensic researcher Jonathan Zdziarski described several undocumented iOS services that can function backdoors, allowing ostensibly encrypted data to be accessed and subverting user privacy.

Zdziarski in a blog post stresses that he is not accusing Apple of working with the NSA, but he voices suspicion that the NSA might have used some of these services to access data on iOS devices, as described in a recent Der Spiegel report.

"I am not suggesting some grand conspiracy," Zdziarski explains. "There are, however, some services running in iOS that shouldn't be there, that were intentionally added by Apple as part of the firmware, and that bypass backup encryption while copying more of your personal data....Read More

Infosys

NEW DELHI: IT services major Infosys said it has secured a multi-year deal from automaker maker Daimler AG for the management of infrastructure services and data centres. 

Financial details of the deal were not revealed. Infosys said in a statement that it has entered into a multi-year agreement with Daimler AG "covering management of infrastructure services and data centres, providing e-collaboration and middleware services as well as overseeing database operations". 

The agreement was signed in the second quarter of Infosys' financial year 2013-14 and the transition was completed and steady state operations started in first quarter of 2014-15, it added.

Yahoo

SAN FRANCISCO: Yahoo will buy mobile analytics startup Flurry to beef up a fast-growing mobile advertising business that still lags Google's and Facebook's in scale. 

Six-year-old Flurry uses analytics to help target ads at consumers by monitoring activity on more than half a million apps on some 1.4 billion mobile devices around the world, Yahoo said in a statement on Monday. 

The startup provides information to help marketers and brands more easily reach their desired audiences, Yahoo said. 

Yahoo did not cite a price tag, but a source familiar with the matter said the internet company is paying several hundred million dollars. Tech blog Re/code earlier reported that rough amount. 

Flurry will operate much as before after the acquisition closes, and its team will remain in their current locations, Yahoo added.

Considering the breakneck one-upsmanship we saw among early SSD makers, record-setting iterations have been slower to arrive over the last two years with 2012's Samsung SSD 840 Pro series maintaining relevance among a laundry list of competing options after price cuts brought it from $1.05 per gigabyte to $0.74 a gig.

That works out to $190 for the 256GB 840 Pro, which is fair but puts the aging enthusiast series in an awkward position just beyond today's finest budget options, including Samsung's own 840 Evo ($0.57 per gig for 250GB) and the $0.43/GB Crucial MX100, which is beside the point that not everyone wants a cut-down drive.
